Removing Sunscreen Stains from Swimwear

Sunscreen is essential, but some formulas leave stubborn yellow or orange marks on swimwear. With a little knowledge you can protect both your skin and your favourite pieces.

Know the culprit

The staining usually comes from avobenzone, a common UV filter that can react with minerals in water to leave rust-coloured marks, especially on light fabrics.

Act quickly

Rinse any sunscreen contact as soon as possible. The longer it sits, the harder the mark is to remove, so do not let it dry into the fabric.

Treat gently

• Soak in cool water with a gentle detergent.
• Dab the stain softly, never scrub aggressively.
• Avoid bleach, which damages elastane and colours.
